There's a small solar panel on top. Leave the lantern outside during the day and it charges the battery inside on its own. When it gets dark, the light comes on automatically. You don't press anything or set timers. Just put it in a spot that sees daylight and it sorts itself out.
Around 12 hours on a good sunny day, which covers most nights. On cloudy days you'll still get 6 to 8 hours, usually enough. Most days in Australia give it more than it needs.

Anywhere it can see the sky during the day. Patio table, garden path, beside the front door, by the pool. All work fine.. More sunlight during the day means more light at night. Just avoid putting it somewhere that's completely covered over where the panel can't see daylight.
Wipe the solar panel every now and then to keep it clean. That's about it.. The LED doesn't need replacing and the battery is built in. Not much else to do.
